The IAPP was founded twenty years ago in response to a growing need for a professional body to recognise and provide a platform of support for those working in Accounts Payable.
It was recognised that accounts payable as a profession was fairly unique in that – although it remained the vanguard of an organisation’s bottom line – it was still possible to serve 20 years in the industry without being formally recognised for doing so. Therefore, the IAPP was founded under the principles of industry recognition, certification and professional support. Above all, the IAPP believes wholeheartedly in education as an ongoing process, and actively supports members in their quest for re-certification and in an ongoing system of seminars, conferences and online material. Since its inception in Orlando, USA, the IAPP now has over 5,000 members, many of whom have gone on to become fully certified. In addition, there are over 70 local chapters. These chapters provide AP managers with a network of like-minded individuals with whom to learn and bounce ideas.
Over the last couple of years, it became apparent from discussions with many AP professionals that the appetite for AP certification and membership of a professional body was not unique to the US. With that in mind, IAPP-UK was set up in March 2009 with the view to rolling out the benefits of IAPP membership to a broader marketplace.
Already gaining pace, IAPP-UK aims to become the top support network for AP professionals. Undoubtedly in the months and years ahead, certification from IAPP-UK will be both looked for by finance employers and sought out by employees as the feather in the cap necessary for career advancement. In times like these if there’s an advantage to be gained – it’s more important than ever to take it.
