| Serious Fraud Office launches criminal investigation into Tesco's accounting |
|
Friday 31st October, 2013 In a further blow to the embattled retailer, The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has announced that it will be making a criminal investigation into the reasons why there was a £263m shortfall in Tesco's profits. The company now faces the prospect of criminal charges, despite making an attempt to fend off further reputational damage when it presented its interim results last week. Tesco has said that the company "has been cooperating fully with the SFO and will continue to do so. Tesco has been notified by the Financial Conduct Authority that, in light of the SFO investigation, its investigation will be discontinued.” It appears that the company may have been indulging in "inappropriate behaviour" with sources close to the company saying that a small group of employees who realised that sales targets would not be hit, negotiated secret deals with suppliers to still make payments, offering benefits in the next financial period for doing so. The SFO confirmed that they have "opened a criminal investigation into accounting practices at Tesco plc.” |
