Monday 1st December, 2014

A former employee of the University of Cambridge has been charged in connection with stealing more than £285,000 from its third oldest college.

The fraud was uncovered after an investigation was launched by Pembroke College in January. The outcome was that a 41-year-old woman was charged with two counts of fraud by abuse of position.

The woman, who has been bailed, is also charged in connection of theft at Girton Social Club.

A spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire police said: "I can confirm a 41-year-old woman from Cambridge has been arrested on suspicion of theft, following a report from Pembroke College."

"She returned to Parkside police station in Cambridge, following bail, and was charged with two counts of fraud by abuse of position, suspected to have stolen £285,986.18 from Pembroke College, Cambridge and £3,198.00 from Girton Social Club. A third charge has been made of false accounting."

The woman is due to appear at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court today.
