The UK’s biggest lenders are to reveal how much they lend at a local level, as part of a move by the Treasury to improve lending transparency.

The Treasury says the new data could help to boost competition and make it easier for small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) to access finance. The lending data will include 10,000 postcodes across the UK.

The European Commission revealed plans to update the Payment Services Directive (PSD) across the EU, which includes a proposed regulation for interchange fees for card-based payment transactions.

The revised directive brings a number of new improvements to the EU payment market, introducing new 'payment initiation services' that operate between the merchant and the purchaser's bank, allowing for electronic payments without the use of a credit card.

The Payments Council has announced a list of banks and building societies that will be participating in the new Current Account Switch Service from September 2013. In total, 33 banks and building societies will be opting for the new scheme, including the ‘big four’ consisting of Barclays, HSBC, RBS, Lloyds Banking Group and others such as NatWest and the Halifax.
